Before You Spray Tan ensure you follow the below steps in order to achieve optimum results;
Plan ahead! Work out what day do you want to look your best and book your spray tan for the day or two before this. A spray tan generally looks the best after having a day or two to settle.
Be sure to wax or shave a day prior to spray tanning to avoid skin irritation.
This is particularly important for waxing, as when you wax your pores can remain open for hours and spray tanning over open pores can encourage blocked pores and bacteria. Further, spray tanning too soon after waxing means you could have remnants of wax on your skin which could strip parts of your tan off or prevent those areas tanning which could lead to a disastrous looking tan!
Shower and exfoliate your entire body concentrating on your skins driest areas such as elbows, knees, feet and ankles.
Use a loofah or an exfoliating glove or mitt, which you can purchase in the ‘Tanning Accessories’ Products section of the site or from a chemist or beauty salon. Ideally, exfoliate a day prior to or the morning of the day you are due to be spray tanned. If possible, shower shortly before you are due at your tanning appointment so you are fresh and clean as you can be and not sweaty.
Do not apply moisturiser to your body or face after showering as it will create a barrier against the tanning solution and prevent it from absorbing and tanning the skin.
Similarly, don’t use deodorants, perfume, body spray or any other beauty product as they will do the same. You need to go barefaced and au natural!
Wear loose fitting, dark clothing to your tanning appointment as the clothes you put on after you are spray tanned will likely be marked by the tanning solution. Most of the solution will wash out and not leave marks, however don’t risk wearing something you wouldn’t like stained if it occurred.
It is best to wear clothes that don’t cling to avoid having your tan rub off on tight fitting tops or snug shorts. It is even a good idea to go braless if you aren’t too self conscious as putting a bra on straight after tanning could result in tan marks.
Wondering what to wear? Don’t feel shy about going topless with only undies on or even – if you are brave – naked. Remember, this is their job and they do it every day and see all types of body shapes! Many girls do go topless so it wouldn’t be weird to them at all! The less you wear the better the results! However, if you would rather cover up a little, wear an old bra or some girls even wear swimmers. It is whatever you feel more comfortable in.
After Your Spray Tan follow the below guidelines to maintain a longer -lasting, better looking tan;
Do not shower for the suggested tanning period – whether it be 8 hours or 2 hours in the case of the faster developing tanning solutions (such as Naked Tan), in order to allow for the tan to develop fully.
Remember, when you first wash off it is normal for some colour to come off – this is the bronzer. Keep your water temperature at cool to warm and don't scrub your skin. Instead, gently wash your body (without using a loofah) and pat your skin with your towel when drying rather then rubbing it.
Do not exercise excessively or participate in activities causing heavy perspiring for at least 6-8 hours after tanning process. For the best results, plan your spray tan so that you are able to head straight home after your appointment and take it easy to avoid rubbing off your tan or getting sweaty and therefore a patchy tan.
Avoid activities which naturally exfoliate the skin such as long baths or chlorine pools.
Moisturise skin daily after your shower with a hydrating body moisturiser or use a tan extender to achieve a longer lasting tan. You can't stop the natural cycle of shedding skin cells, but you can keep your skin hydrated so that patchiness is reduced as your tan fades.
Avoid shaving straight away after spray tanning as it will strip off your tan and act as an exfoliate.
If you follow these points you will achieve a gorgeous natural-looking tan which will last for 8-10 days!
